The World Cup Is Over. America Can Return to Real Football.

The World Cup is over, which means America can finally stop performing polite interest in a sport that asks for 90 full minutes and occasionally delivers a score of 0-0. That is not a result. That is an unanswered email.

Soccer fans will say the tension is the point. I understand that. But in America, we prefer our tension with points on the board, wings on the table, and at least one person yelling at the television like the quarterback can hear him through the screen.

Now we can return to real football: the NFL, college Saturdays, fantasy leagues that destroy lifelong friendships, and the annual tradition of an uncle explaining how he would have gone pro if not for “the knee.” This is a sport with helmets, collisions, instant overreactions, and scoreboards that look like serious work is being done.

Soccer remains confusing in a very specific way. Ninety minutes. Constant movement. Elite cardio. Then everybody goes home with one point and a polite handshake. Meanwhile, American football gives you drama, strategy, chaos, snacks, and a fourth quarter designed to test your blood pressure and your marriage.

And let us be honest: no American has ever confidently explained offside without sounding like they are testifying before Congress. If I need a diagram, a whistle, and a bilingual consultant just to understand why a goal does not count, I am already tired.

Give me the huddle. Give me the two-minute drill. Give me the 20-yard pass, the end-zone dance, and the deeply irrational belief that this year will be different for my team.

So yes, the global celebration was lovely. But the pads are back, the grills are on, and the real season has arrived.
