The Super-Funny Queen of Silly: Maya Rudolph! By Mary Boyce

Have you ever seen someone make a face so goofy that you actually fell off your chair laughing? That is Maya Rudolph. She is basically a professional "silly person," but she is so good at it that she became one of the biggest stars on Saturday Night Live (SNL).

She Can Be Anyone!

Maya is like a human chameleon. She doesn’t just tell jokes; she transforms! One minute she is pretending to be a fancy fashion designer, and the next she is making a hilarious, wrinkly face as a grumpy teacher.

She spent 15 years on SNL showing everyone that you don't have to pick just one way to be funny. She can sing, she can dance, and she can make a "stink face" that deserves an award.

Talent Runs in the Family

Maya didn't just wake up one day with a beautiful singing voice—she got it from her mom! Her mother was the super-famous singer, Minnie Riperton. If you ask your parents, they probably know her mom’s famous song "Lovin' You," where she sings a note so high only a bird (or a very confused dog) could hit it. Maya took that amazing singing talent and used it to make people giggle. Instead of just singing serious songs, she uses her voice to play hilarious divas and pop stars.

Maya is a total boss for so many reasons, especially because she isn't afraid to break the rules. She proved that Black women in comedy can play any character they imagine, whether they are acting like a royal queen or a silly lady at the grocery store. Maya is also incredibly kind, and she chooses to make people laugh by being joyful and high-energy instead of being mean. No matter how wild or goofy a scene gets, she never gives up and usually keeps a straight face until the very end!

How to Be Like Maya

The best lesson we can learn from Maya Rudolph is to be yourself. If you have a weird voice you like to do, or if you love making funny faces in the mirror—keep doing it!

Maya teaches us that being the "funny kid" can actually change the world. She turned her imagination into a superpower. So, the next time you feel a case of the "sillies" coming on, just remember, you might just be the next Maya Rudolph!

Keep dreaming, keep laughing, and don't forget to sing at the top of your lungs! Continue to enjoy International Women's Month!
